Applied Graphic Design

Skateboard Design

Before I start to design skateboard, I need to know about certain target of skateboard first since we need to use abstract art for the expression. During researching the target of skateboard user, I found that, the majority of gender is male, which means female barely enjoy this sport because it is easily hurt, too fast, and too dangerous sometimes. Also main age of user is around 10 to 30 years old. To sum up this target information to apply the skateboard design, I need some concept with dynamic, dangerous but exciting, and thing male mainly enojy, and finally I have got this idea, gamble, and I chose Poker game, which is the most popular trump card game, as my concept for this time. Furthermore, I used high contrasted color to make whole mood younger, and used main horizontal line so that these five skateboard looks united in the end. The contents about the design is Royal Flush, which is the strongest result in poker game, also same reason for choosing spade out of four symbol in trump card among clover, heart, diamond, and spade. To follow the design rule in trump card, I made the up side down mirror style of design so that when the user of the skateboard turn his board, still he can see same design, but I made different size of spade in each top and bottom side to distinguish where is top, and bottom.

Mood board for skateboard design.

At this time of mood board, I focused on understanding what is abstract art, and what kind of colour, and style I want to choose for the project. Also, I finalised theme as card game, and it should be poker since poker game is the most popular trump card game. And, during I research some picture about skateboard, I figured that the majority of target user is male, and age between 10-30, which is young. So, I think I will use high contrast colour to express youth.

Research for abstract art.

1. Definition of Abstract art. Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.

2. Six famous abstract artists who have their own special style and personal nuances shown in their artwork.

1. Pablo Picasso: Famous for his work in Cubism, it is debatable whether Picasso’s work be classified as abstract or not, though many seem to think so. It is certainly true that his artworks and practice of Cubism and participation in the Cubist movement have, at the very least, paved the way for all future abstract painters. His most famous paintings include “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” “Guernica,” and the “Sleeping Gypsy.”
2. Paul Klee: A German Swiss painter, Klee was well practiced in many styles inclulding expressionism, cubism, orientalism and surrealism. He wrote in detail about color theory, was well acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky and taught at the German Bauhaus school for art. His most famous work is the “The Twittering Machine.”
3. Franz Marc: A German painter and printmaker, Franz Marc is largely considered one of the most important painters of the German Expressionist art movement. A founding member of ‘The Blue Rider,’ a journal the was made up of collaborating artists. Many of his works including animals in natural settings, Marc’s most famous works include “Large Blue Horses” and “The Fox.”
4. Gustav Klimt: An Austrian symbolist painter, Gustav Klimt was an extremely active member in the Vienna Secession movement. A well-rounded artist, Klimt was a painter, sketcher, muralist, and more. The subject of most of his works was usually the female body and he was known for the provocative and erotic themes in his paintings. His most famous paintings include “The Kiss” and “Gold Coin.”
5. Salvador Dali: A Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dali is one of the most famous painters of the surrealist movement. Known for the bizarre themes in his paintings, Dali was well-practiced in many different artistic mediums including sculpture, painting, film, and photography. His most famous pieces include “The Persistence of Memory” and “Sleep.”
6. Wassily Kandinsky:A Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky is credited as creating the first purely abstract painting. Originally a student of law and economics, Kandinsky did not begin his painting and art studies until the age of 30. He taught at the German Bauhaus school for art and was friends with Paul Klee, another teacher there and fellow artist. His most famous pieces include “Autumn in Bavaria” and “Composition X.”

Poster Vol.02 expression about surrealism.

First of all, hope you guys just enjoy this as same as when you guys try to appreciate any surrealistic art at the gallery, and when you felt something from it, that will be the meaning :)

However, for someone (probably most of..) who need exact intention about this work, here is my purpose about this picture.
First of all, I used red colour on the black and white colour to give red object a stress. This red object is consist of mask, roses, pearls, and smoke which has each meanings of humans identity, trying to find a beauty, well-packed speech, and habitant of forget something easily. and besides, wings near ears position of mask represent humans mind which can change so light that it can fly.
Thus, when it all come together, it will be that although we always try to find our identity as ultimate assessment for our life, it is not easy unless we see, speak, and think right thing no matter how we put our effort in it - this is why the mask is tearing.
For the background, there are water wave and wide natural view down there, and it means that our seeking will go on in the place we live.

thank you.

Mood board for surrealism poster.

As you can see the picture above, right side is consist of key items such as mask, abstract faces, and there are some surrealism arts on the left side.

The reason why I used these pictures is that I want to express what is identity since I have free topic at this project. So, the human face will be main item because human face represents one's identity most of times and, it will be mixed with mask, coin, and some diagrams which have meaning of double side.

Since this concept, consideration of identity, is on-going topic for entire of human history, it cannot have certain answer, so I will use grey tone of colour for the most of my work, and also black and white will be used to show the two extremes, and I will stress one point with red colour to show the passion about this concept which has been, and will be by great number of people.

Final touching of the project.

Rationale:
Attached picture is Che Oprah for this project. I tired to express a face of Oprah Winfrey being perceived to monkey with Che Guevara's hat, and used Oprah Winfrey Show's logo.

As you can see the picture, general color theme is dark tone of mood, that's because my concept for this time has critical and serious massage.
From monkey looking Oprah’s face and her TV show’s logo, I want to tell she is one of famous animals in TV Zoo. And since Che Guevara is symbol of rebels, and the meaning of “che” is a friend of everyone, I used it to express of Oprah’s absolute influence to the public. Lastly, dark brown tone of back ground shows that the spreading power of her words from the top part of expression, and possibility of corruption of her words from the bottom part of expression which looks melting down, and dark mood of color as it is.

In overall, I want to express that, although Oprah Winfrey is known as one of greatest people in the world, since she is also just human being like anybody, she cannot be right all the time, and it still affects people which can be wrong.

Progress 8th Dec.

cleaned tone of colour smooth, and fix some shape, and made variations of eyes.

Current Progress, Dec 7th.

Since previous color version of portrait looks more like male, I focused to fix whole shape at this time.
I give her a long hair, remove beard, changed and clean tone of color into a bit more brown, and put detail as well.

To get better progress for the next time, need to clean the color more smooth to express woman's skin, and maybe give her a bit more thin face shape.

A fixed mood board

changed mood board: put all images researches together in the current progress.

A bit of variation about painting.

Added brightness, beard near mouth, fixed shape a bit.
but looks too ugly although I intended like this.
Sadly, now it looks more Sauel Jackson, than Oprah Winfrey :(
have to fix the shape of face when every detail I will work on.

Mood board for the portrait.

folloed picture is a moos board for this project. I tired to express a face of Oprah Winfrey being percieved to monkey with Che Guevara's hat, and used Oprah Winfrey Show's logo as background.

As you can see the picture, general color theme is a bit desaturated and dark tone of mood, that's because my concept for this time has critical and serious massage at this time. Furthermore, the background yellow color has spread gradient which has meaning of impact of her words that has power.

For getting better result, I will try to put more detail on her face and other parts, and get clearer meaning of background.

Images research for 4 keywords.

researched some images about 4 keywords to prepare mood board.

Brainstorming of the Project.

I did brainstorming about Oprah Winfrey to find proper concept, and I found
4 keywords, Rushmore, Che guevara, Speech, and Monkey.

About portrait target "Oprah Winfrey"

Oprah Winfrey (born Orpah Gail Winfrey on January 29, 1954) is an American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer and philanthropist. Winfrey is best known for her self-titled, multi-award-winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and was for a time the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world.

Theme for Target, Oprah Winfrey, "The Oprah Effect"

The power of Winfrey's opinions and endorsement to influence public opinion, especially consumer purchasing choices, has been dubbed "The Oprah Effect". The effect has been documented or alleged in domains as diverse as book sales, beef markets, and election voting. Late in 1996, Winfrey introduced the Oprah's Book Club segment to her television show. The segment focused on new books and classics, and often brought obscure novels to popular attention. The book club became such a powerful force that whenever Winfrey introduced a new book as her book-club selection, it instantly became a best-seller; for example, when she selected the classic John Steinbeck novel East of Eden, it soared to the top of the book charts. Being recognized by Winfrey often means a million additional book sales for an author. In Reading with Oprah: The Book Club that Changed America (2005), Kathleen Rooney describes Winfrey as "a serious American intellectual who pioneered the use of electronic media, specifically television and the Internet, to take reading – a decidedly non-technological and highly individual act – and highlight its social elements and uses in such a way to motivate millions of erstwhile non-readers to pick up books."

When author Jonathan Franzen's book was selected for the Book Club, he reportedly "cringed" and said selected books tend to be "schmaltzy". After James Frey's A Million Little Pieces was found to contain fabrications in 2006, Winfrey confronted him on her show over the breach of trust. In 2009, Winfrey apologized to Frey for the public confrontation. During a show about mad cow disease with Howard Lyman (aired on April 16, 1996), Winfrey said she was stopped cold from eating another burger. Texas cattlemen sued her and Lyman in early 1998 for "false defamation of perishable food" and "business disparagement", claiming that Winfrey's remarks sent cattle prices tumbling, costing beef producers $11 million. On February 26, after a two month trial in an Amarillo, Texas court, a jury found Winfrey and Lyman were not liable for damages. During the lawsuit, Winfrey hired Phil McGraw's company Courtroom Sciences, Inc. to help her analyze and read the jury.[citation needed] McGraw made such an impression on Winfrey that she invited him to appear on her show. He accepted the invitation and appeared regularly on The Oprah Winfrey Show before launching his own show, Dr. Phil, created in 2002 by Winfrey's production company, Harpo Productions, in partnership with CBS Paramount, which produced the show.[citation needed] Winfrey's ability to launch other successful talk shows such as Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray has also been cited as examples of "The Oprah Effect".
Winfrey joins Barack and Michelle Obama on the campaign trail (December 10, 2007).

Winfrey endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, the first time she endorsed a political candidate running for office. Winfrey held a fundraiser for Obama on September 8, 2007, at her Santa Barbara estate. In December 2007, Winfrey joined Obama for a series of rallies in the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. The Columbia, South Carolina event on December 9, 2007, drew a crowd of nearly 30,000, the largest for any political event of 2007. An analysis by two economists at the University of Maryland, College Park estimated that Winfrey's endorsement was responsible for between 423,123 and 1,596,995 votes for Obama in the Democratic primary alone, based on a sample of states that did not include Texas, Michigan, North Dakota, Kansas, or Alaska. The results suggest that in the sampled states, Winfrey's endorsement was responsible for the difference in the popular vote between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, reported being so impressed by Winfrey's endorsement that he considered offering Winfrey Obama's vacant senate seat describing Winfrey as "the most instrumental person in electing Barack Obama president", with "a voice larger than all 100 senators combined". Winfrey responded by stating that although she was absolutely not interested, she did feel she could be a senator.

**She,Oprah Winfrey, has strong power of her words to move public's mind, and it seems the living god to me. Although she does a lot of good things for the world, since she is also human being like everybody else, she can not be perfect always, and some of her words with her personal opinion might direct public to inappropriate way. So, I want to give the public message about this, using symbolized Oprah Winfrey's portrait which is reflected by a style of The Die Laughing Collective.

Additional research about Jamin, his works.

Paintings.

Installations.

Others.

He, Jamin, seemed a graffiti artist like other members in the Die Laughing Collective at the begging of the research but, it turned out he is more like a painter who study pure art, in his personal works, mainly what he draw is painting, some of installations, and other stuffs related with pure art. I don't know whether he is the only one who draw pure art style of painting in his group, but certainly his artistic skill make their team to have differences from other graffitis I assume.

**So, I think the collective's style is in somewhere between graffiti and pure art with certain theme, 'neo-conservatism'.**

**to apply their style into my work in this project, I think I should use graffiti style with deep level of detail what pure art has. Furthermore, probably I will use a "Sic semper tyrannis"(thus, always to tyrants), one of theme they used to keep their value, neo-conservatism, onto my work.**

Additional research about Jamin, one of the Collective's members.

I've tried to find each members of their information but, there is not, they don't even share their facebook!!, except for Jamin, one of members in Die laughing collective, and only information I can get since he has his own website, and it seems he conduct his own artwork often compare to other members in the collective.

Jamin (b.1976, Sydney) is an Australian artist, based in Hobart. Jamin’s work challenges cultural myths, exploring slippages between identity, media, politics and popular culture. Through combining elements of street and protest culture with absurdity and ambivalence, he creates often wild reflections of contemporary mediated experience.

In 2008 Jamin was selected for 'Contemporary Australia: Optimism', a major triennial exhibition presenting leading contemporary Australian art at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane. His solo exhibitions include: Inertia Force Change Inertia (Criterion Gallery, 2008), First We Take Paris, then We Take the World (Devonport Regional Gallery - Solo Commission 2007) and Tasmania: Explore the Possibilties (INFLIGHT, 2007). He is also regularly involved in group and curated exhibitions and projects around Australia, workshops with school and community groups and public and private commissions.

Jamin is also a founding member of Die Laughing Collective (2004) with Paicey and Empire. The collective produce large scale works both on and off the street. Die Laughing were invited to exhibit at the MAY's Project in Sydney in 2006, and have been involved with both the 2006 and 2009 Retrospective exhibitions with MAY's. Die Laughing Collective were invited to both the 2005 and 2006 Melbourne Stencil Festivals as featured artists.

Jamin is represented by Criterion Gallery in Hobart, and is a Board member of Contemporary Art Spaces Tasmania (CAST), Tasmania's peak contemporary art body. Jamin served as a board member for INFLIGHT Artist Run Initiative from 2005-2009, where he was the Chair from 2006-2008. He was also a founding partner of Red Wall Gallery in 2005.

Jamin holds an MFA from the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania (2008), and currently works there as a sessional staff member.

Additional research about Die Laughing Collective.

the Collective normally work in 4 ways, Street gallery, Exhibition, Street, Off street. which means mainly they draw graffiti on the wall, and sometimes they hold their own exhibition, or enter certain exhibition- Outpost project, i.e-, and draw some of their art in formal ways which they don't do often. So, their majority of works are graffiti on the wall, and here's some of them.

as we can see in their works, there is not certain style of them which means, if we saw any works of them on the street, it would be hard to recognise that the work is from the collective easily. Also, although they have certain value of their works, Neo-conservatism, it is hard to find the value in their work easily.

About Artist, "Die Laughing Collective"

First of all, here's description of them according to Outpost project.

Die Laughing Collective was formed 2004 by Jamin, Paicey and Empire. The collective was immersed during its formative stage in an artistic, ideological and geographic synergy, producing work that confronted the rise od neo-conservatism, Howardism and a resource- based war, from the unique vantage point of Hobart, Tasmania - a place seemingly removed from global affairs and yet mothering its own micro-scale resource war and neo-conservative upswing. The street, and the immediate nature of street-based method such as spray cans and stencils, provided the perfect Jubricant to foment the collective's anti-establishment bent. The collective has been scattered across various parts of Australia and the globe since 2008. The war continues. The neo-conservatives and their values remain entrenched. Die Laughing Collectivr will continue to resist.

And here's there web address.

Die Laughing Collective

Since Die Laughing Collective is a team consist of 3 members, it is hard to find a certain style of the team as you can see the pictures above. According to their web site, they normally work in Melbourne these days and Sometimes they work together, but sometimes they work each, even open one's own exhibition. However, most commonly what they do is graffiti on the street. So, I think I should follow the style of the picture I picked for this team's portrait.

Outpost Project

In Cockatoo island, I met this, "Sic Semper Tyrannis" by Die laughing collective, and it was quietly interesting because of simple but, strong impact, and high quality of expression as well.

Poster final drafts15th, Nov, 2011

thought my concept is bit weaker than I have expacted in actual artwork, decided to go for making a series.

first two: Wifi signal=smoke => smart effect can be spread easily and widely
the other two: SNS need device like smart phone=>smart phone=door to the another world

I might have series of campaign poster at this time, since I have no longer ideas, and current ideas seem not too strong to grab audiences' attraction. Already got some pictures for the poster, but they don't seem to be appropriate to use. need to get another or new idea.

or maybe, i should think in another way to express my concept such as advertising poster for special event such as christmas.

I have thought of ideas to express my concept, Smart effect and here are some ideas and keywords about it so far.
---
smart phones, laptops, and PCs are making city view. = SNS is another city(life) already.

smartphone = gate, or door to another world.

some houses made of each smart phones among formal houses.

a smart phone house which emit Wi-fi smoke.

Using pet prohibited sign which is not online world, using dog house image, a dog, which loves a smart phone rather than a bone.
---
although it feels like my brain is made of cloud at the moment, I could get some ideas at least, and will get some fixed and clear images for my poster soon. hopefully :p
